I noticed that thinking strategically really kicked in for me when I had to figure out how tools like a cloud auto dialer fit into a marketing campaign. Working on assignments that asked me to plan real tactics forced me to connect ideas with actual tools businesses use, which made it all click way better than just reading theory.
